a day at the fair

yesterday we attended the white trash extravaganza of the year -- the la county fair. whew.

i wanted to take paul because i thought he'd like it, but not on a weekend. however, since my work schedule is all wacky right now, i didn't think we'd be able to go at all. cam decided that we should just suck it up and go on a sunday morning since we had free tickets courtesy of my aunt, so off we went.

oh my god. i know i've changed, but wow. i do not think the fair was not nearly this trashy when i was a child:

beer ads everywhere (and taps, too -- a few places had newcastle, though, so it wasn't all bad)
dilapidated carnival game booths (a particularly annoying one had a recorded voice going on and on about "800 ways to win." the folks staffing the booth didn't look too enthused about being there, so i guess it's just as well they had someone else to do their advertising for them.)
amusing junk food kiosks (my personal favorite was the one trumpeting funnel cakes and pot stickers. in the spirit of the fair, i did try the deep-fried oreos. surprisingly good, but i think i never need to eat those again.)
rickety carnival rides (although, to be honest, i'd probably ride a few of we didn't have paul with us.)
blaring pop music
really, really gruesome hot-weather attire (i think the goths walking around with stuffed animals deserved props for being so modestly attired (all black, natch) in that heat.)

i couldn't believe how expensive everything was. adult (13-up, i think) admission tickets were $15. not bad, but then you factor in ride tickets and food... eesh. costwise, it was pretty much just like a standard amusement park if not more.

i think perhaps the highlight of the trip would have the be the five or so minutes cam and paul spent in the petting zoo -- well, maybe minus the fact that poor cam knelt in animal pee. eeew. we also watched a horse race, but that was sort of unexciting. we did welcome the coolness of the stands, though. it was a nice place to sit for 20 minutes or so. cam and paul also enjoyed the roasted corn on the cob they ate while we sat there. i can't eat that stuff in public. i just can't.

when we got home, i slept for three hours. too much sun (despite sunscreen, my nose is red today). too much yuckness.
