easy reader
paul's favorite book is the little engine that could. it tickles me that he has a favorite book. he wants that book read to him each and every night, sometimes more than once. (his second favorite book is corny cornpicker finds a home, which he calls "corndy." john deere propaganda at its finest. long live the green and yellow.)
i think what charms me the most about paul's favorite book is that it's totally appropriate. he loves trains, he's still a little unsure about what he's capable of, it's full of repetition and colorful pictures and action words... it's perfect for him.
he came across it one day in a bookcase. drawn by the illustration of the train on front cover, he looked it over and eventually made cam read it to him. (a teacher gave me a copy of the book when i was in high school. guess she saw some unfulfilled potential in me? i don't know.) i didn't realize he was even interested until he was mumbling something while pushing a train over a hill.
paul: mumble mumble mumble
me: what did you say?
paul: mumble
me: what?
cam: i think i can... i think i can...
paul: i can! i can!
i'm not looking forward to the day when he decides he's too old to think he can.
