practicality, or the importance of age limits

me: you know that toy he wants?
me: it's age 10 and up, so i think he's going to have to wait on that.
my mom: the one in the catalog -- fao schwartz -- is the same... or 8 and up, maybe?
me: i can see him being old enough for 3 or 4 and up.
me: but 8 or 10? no.
my mom: that's not what he thinks.
me: yeah, but we're the ones with the money, so he needs to just chill.
