gallows humor

last year a retired colleague (i didn't know him very well) ended his life by jumping from a window of his office.

a dear (much older) friend gave me the news, adding earnestly, "i'll never make suicide jokes again."

i assumed he didn't know anything about my history--indeed, if he had, i'm sure he would have gone out of his way to refrain from suicide jokes in my presence because he can be sensitive like that. wonder how he would have responded if i had actually said what was on my mind: "sweetheart, to survivors--of all kinds--sometimes the jokes are all we have left."
